3rd Grade

Our self-contained third grade is a year of growth and change. Third grade marks an important time in their education as they transition into more independent learners. Students use textbooks on a regular basis, participate in large and small group learning, receive homework and have the availability of a wide variety of chapter books in the classroom. With a computer cart in the classroom, students have access to technology on a daily basis. Specials classes of library, technology, P.E., music, and classroom counseling continue our growth as learners. We also buddy up with preschoolers once a week and read!

CKLA Literacy:

Reading shifts this year as we are finalizing our foundational skills acquisition and applying our knowledge of word parts to understand new words and gain reading comprehension. Students are shifting from learning to read to reading to learn in our CKLA curriculum. They still are exposed to rich topics that will build from knowledge of previous years.

Illustrative Math:

Students start the year diving into multiplication and its connections to what they already know from previous years. The concepts are revisited throughout the year to help them become more fluent with their facts by the end of the year.

Science:

During third grade, students spend part of the year in the greenhouse learning about plants and how to nurture their growth. Students then sell these plants to parents and teachers to fund future greenhouse projects. In addition to learning about the science of plants, students will use Mystery Doug curriculum to learn other science concepts.
